A Guidebook for Less lethal Devices: Planning for, Selecting, and Implementing Technology Solutions

National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Weapons and Protective Systems Technologies Center (WPSTC), and Pennsylvania State University, 2010

This guide is designed to provide a comprehensive view of less-lethal technologies, their evolutionary role in criminal justice, and considerations when acquiring such devices to meet operational needs. It is segregated into six self-contained chapters which provide information and insight into specific areas of inquiry. The first three chapters provide background information on less-lethal device evolution and use as well as a synopsis of development and testing. Chapter 4 provides an overview of less-lethal technologies. The final two chapters provide a framework for program development. Endnotes are provided for each chapter to clarify or augment information provided in the text and to identify reference and source material.
