National Recommendations for Depicting Suicide

National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and Entertainment Industries Council, 2019

Studies have shown that both news reports and fictional accounts of suicide in movies and television can lead to increases in suicide. In contrast, when depictions are done responsibly, the media can help to encourage help seeking, dispel myths, and reinforce hope to ultimately save lives. These recommendations aim to help members of the entertainment industry, including content creators, scriptwriters, and producers, tell more balanced and authentic stories involving suicide that promote hope and healing. Representatives from the entertainment industry and the suicide prevention field informed the collective recommendations, which advance Goal 4 of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.
