The Role of Local Law Enforcement Agencies in Preventing and Investigating Cybercrime

Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), 2014

This report aims to describe what police chiefs and other experts are currently identifying as best approaches to addressing cybercrime. On September 10, 2013, PERF held an executive-level Summit for law enforcement practitioners on the local police response to cybercrime. Participants in the PERF Summit described the evolving nature of the cybercrime threat, including how nearly every type of “traditional” crime today can contain cyber aspects. The report includes comments made by participants at PERF’s Summit about the state of cybercrime and local police agencies’ response. Sections of the report address the nature of the challenges, challenges in confronting cybercrime, promising practices, and the use of social media for investigation and crime prevention.
