In February we welcome Dr. Gary J. Margolis to our free webinar series, Campus Public Safety Online, to discuss social media’s role in campus safety.

Gary Margolis Headshot

Dr. Gary J. Margolis is currently the founder and CEO of Social Sentinel, Inc., a digital threat alert service. Gary’s professional career spans over 20 years of distinguished service in public safety and over a decade in higher education serving as chief of police at the University of Vermont. Gary is a consultant, speaker, educator, and trainer with expertise in crises response and communications, security technology application, emergency response and recovery planning, and preventing sexual and gender violence.

In October 2016, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) raised concerns with the largest social media services over law enforcement’s use of their data to monitor users’ social media posts. The ACLU’s findings led several companies that allowed such monitoring to lose access to their Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram feeds, effectively putting many out of business. Campus safety teams that recognized the importance of social media in campus safety and security were left in a bind, wondering how to proceed.

In this discussion, Gary will provide insight into what happened and discuss how campus officials can receive threat alert information. Gary will provide cases exemplifying the type of information available to officials responsible for safeguarding their communities while maintaining the rights of social media users. The session will end with a review of the critical elements that every campus should include in their operating procedures and end user training programs to ensure that balance is properly maintained.
